How to Install a Vented Hood on a Jeep Wrangler (JL & JK)

Swapping a vented hood is a classic first DIY job for Jeep owners: one person, 1-2 hours, basic hand tools, no lift needed — the steel hood runs about 40-50 lb, so a second pair of hands is welcome insurance. This guide covers both the JL (2018+) and the JK (2007-2018); the process is identical, with a small latch difference at Step 6.

Time budget: removing the old hood ~15 min · fitting the new one ~30 min · gap & latch adjustment ~20 min · final checks ~10 min.

Tool list

The 8 steps

1

Open & support the factory hood

Open the hood and secure it with the factory prop rod. Confirm the support point isn't bent.

2

Disconnect the latch cable (JL only)

On the JL, the release cable attaches to the latch assembly. Release the cable clip with a plastic pry tool and note the routing path — you'll reinstall it the same way. The JK has no cable; skip ahead.

3

Remove the factory hood

With a helper on each side, remove the 10mm hinge bolts (2-3 per side). Support the hood before removing the last bolt, lift it off gently, and lay it flat on a blanket. Don't touch the hinges — their factory position transfers straight to the new hood.

4

Inspect seals & latch

If the factory hood seal is cracked or compressed, replace it — it's a $15-25 wear item and not worth skipping. The latch assembly reuses factory parts; our hoods use the factory latch position, no modifications needed.

5

Fit the new hood on the hinges

Two people lift the new hood and align it with the hinge holes (factory-matched — no drilling, no enlargement). Start the bolts on one side but don't tighten yet; leave slack for alignment.

6

Align the latch

JL: reconnect the latch cable and test that it releases smoothly. JK: visually align the latch with the factory catch. Once aligned, tighten the hinge bolts.

7

Close & adjust the gaps

Close the hood and check that the gaps are even on both sides (A-pillar side and cowl side). If they're uneven, loosen the hinge bolts, nudge until left matches right, then tighten.

8

Final check

Open and close 2-3 times: the latch bites fully, the prop rod seats properly, and the wipers clear the hood edge. Done.

Common questions

It's primer — do I have to paint before installing?

No. Primer has base rust protection; drive it as-is without issue. For long-term weather resistance we recommend painting first — see the real cost math. If you paint first, allow the shop's cure time before install.

Do I need an aftermarket latch?

No. Our hoods reuse the factory latch position and parts. Some styles on the market do require latch kits — always check before buying elsewhere.

Wind noise or rattling after install?

A properly fitted hood shouldn't rattle. If you hear a gap whistle, check the seal pressure first, then fine-tune the hinge position.

Want the shortcut?

Every Hoodsmith hood ships with a printed photo guide, and buyers can request the install video any time — just ask.
